Conquering your fear of public speaking

If something scares you, you will avoid it, and if you avoid it, you will not get enough practice, and when you don’t get enough practice, you will not get better at it, and if you are not getting better at it, you will continue to be afraid of it. This cycle of fear can go on and on. But it doesn’t have to. With the number of options available, it is up to you to decide when and how to break this cycle of fear of public speaking.

Glossophobia — is the medical term used for the fear of public speaking. The word glossophobia derives from the Greek γλῶσσα glōssa, meaning tongue, and φόβος phobos, fear.

It’s no secret that a large portion of the population absolutely despises talking in front of a crowd.

Public speaking is the number one fear in the world. In some studies, people have said they would rather die than speak in public.

 Can you believe that?

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that public speaking anxiety, or glossophobia, affects about 73% of the population. The underlying fear is judgment or negative evaluation by others.

Did you know that fear we experience is actually ADRENALINE based. That means that it’s unpleasant but not debilitating. Here’s the good news: with a little work, we can turn those butterflies to our advantage.

So many opportunities become available to you when you can communicate your worth.

Here are some tips that will launch you into the speaking stratosphere.

  • Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway

Instead of using this fear against you, use it to your advantage. “Your brain doesn’t know the difference between fear and anxiety. It’s up to you to let your brain know you’re excited, not scared.”  – Mel Robbins

  • Breathe – Just before taking the stage, take a few deep breaths

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, weight equally distributed, and raise your arms up over your head. Breathe in deeply. Now as you exhale, slowly lower your arms down to your sides and keep your ribcage where it is. Make sure your shoulders are back, not hunched up behind your ears. This is the best posture for speaking (and singing); you are standing tall, you are owning your full height, and you are resonating confidence.

  • Body Language and Movement

Remember, communication is much more about tone and body language than the words we say. The words of course matter, but emphasis comes with movement and body language. Body language is a crucial element of effective public speaking. But mastering body language is not about learning a list of rules about where to put your arms and feet at which moment. Body language power comes from within.

  • Your Voice is your best friend

Is your voice fully expressive? It needs to be, if you’re going to convey the subtle meanings of the points you’re making. Too many public speakers fail to realize the power and importance of not speaking at times. Allow the gravity and weight of what has been spoken to settle on your listeners.

  • Know your audience

If you are speaking in front of an audience, there is usually a reason. Know who you are speaking to and what they want or need to take away. If it’s friends and family, entertain them. If it’s a corporate event, teach and inspire them. Knowing the demographic of the audience is imperative.

When you’re a public speaking pro, you have the power of persuasion.

YOU have the power to influence others and inspire them.

If you want to invest in something with minimum risk and a guaranteed big return, invest in yourself

The goal is not to be “perfect”, but rather confident and engaging. For many this is a real fear and holds them back from reaching their full potential.
