12 Questions for every small business owner who wants ‘more.’

When you don’t have the clients you want or the income you want in your business, how do you find the success you are seeking?

Do you change your website? Do more marketing? Create a new service or product?

These are some of the questions a small business owner asks themselves when they need more clients and income.

Are you ready to try a different approach? I’m going to suggest a more profound exercise that is short to do and can produce powerful results.

The questions arise from the natural cycle I observe in our environment: Death, Decay, Birth and Growth. You may be tempted to jump to Birth and Growth as this is the natures of small business. To have an idea and grow it profitably.

The more profound and sustainable answers you seek in your attention to the death and decay sections. This is where the powerful shifts will occur.

Give it a go and see what reflections arise for you. I’d love to hear from you once you are complete, especially if any strong emotions stem from this exercise. Positive or negative ones!

What needs to end in your current business?

What do you need to stop doing so much?

What is no longer profitable?

What is no longer working as well as it used to?

What have you learned from something you recently stopped doing?

Is your business model outdated or old fashioned?

Who could support you in evaluating real insights?

What is ready to emerge or come alive that you’ve been dismissing because you ‘don’t have time’?

How can you use recent learning to design something new?

What about this new emergence is influenced by previous work?

Who or what could support this new growth?

How do you invest more time and energy in new growth?

I’d love to hear your reflections from this exercise with your team and loved ones.

I will leave you with one of my favourite quotes when it comes to change.

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”  Buckminster Fuller
